Learn the complete pre-print workflow: export, slice, configure slicer settings, and send to printer — understanding every step and why it matters.
Learn — read and understand
Stage 1: Exporting from CAD as STL
The first step in preparing for print is exporting your CAD model as an STL file. In Tinkercad: click 'Export' → select '.STL' → choose resolution (Fine for small/detailed objects, Medium for standard). Save the file with a descriptive name including dimensions and version number: 'pencil_holder_v2_80x80x90mm.stl'.
Stage 2: Importing into slicer software
Slicer software (Cura, PrusaSlicer) converts the STL into printer instructions. Import your STL and check: Is it the right size? Is it sitting flat on the print bed? Is it positioned away from the edges? STL unit mismatch error: if your model appears 25× too large, the slicer is importing mm as inches — fix by setting import unit to mm.
The five critical slicer settings — Grade 4 level
1. Layer height: 0.2mm (balance of speed and quality). 2. Infill percentage: 20% for decorative, 40% for functional. 3. Wall count: 3 walls (strong, clean outer surface). 4. Print speed: 50mm/s (reliable for most PLA). 5. Supports: ON if any overhang exceeds 45°. These five settings determine 90% of print quality, strength, and time.
Stage 3: Slicing and reviewing the preview
After setting slicer parameters, click 'Slice.' ALWAYS review the layer preview before printing. Scroll through layers looking for: areas where infill suddenly stops (= design error), support structures in unexpected locations, thin walls that look transparent (= below minimum thickness). Five minutes of review prevents 3 hours of failed prints.

Configure 5 settings, slice, review
Layer height: 0.2mm. Infill: 20–40%. Walls: 3. Speed: 50mm/s. Supports: only if needed. Then slice → review → print.

Quiz — Designer Stage, Level 4
1What file format does Tinkercad export for 3D printing?
2Your model appears 25× too large when imported into the slicer. What is the most likely cause?
3For a functional pencil holder that must hold weight, which infill percentage is most appropriate?
4Why should you ALWAYS review the layer preview after slicing but BEFORE printing?
5What does a higher wall count (e.g., 4 walls vs 2 walls) produce?
