Observing the 3D Printing Process

Watch, understand, and analyze every stage of 3D printing — from digital file to physical object.

The complete 3D printing workflow
3D printing is a four-stage process: (1) Design the object in CAD software. (2) Export the design as an STL file. (3) Import the STL into slicing software, which converts it into layer-by-layer instructions. (4) Send the sliced file to the printer, which builds the object layer by layer using melted filament.
STL
What is an STL file?
STL (Standard Tessellation Language) is the file format that connects CAD software to 3D printers. It describes the surface of a 3D object as a mesh of thousands of small triangles. The more triangles, the more accurately it represents curved surfaces. STL is the universal language of 3D printing.
SLICER LAYERS
Slicing software: translating design into printer instructions
Slicing software (like Cura or PrusaSlicer) takes your STL file and "slices" it into hundreds or thousands of horizontal layers. It calculates the exact path the printer nozzle must follow for each layer. It also adds support structures for overhanging parts and generates the final G-code file.
FIRST LAYER = CRITICAL
Observing a print: what to look for
When watching a 3D printer, observe: the nozzle temperature (PLA prints at ~200°C), the bed temperature (~60°C), the first layer adhesion (critical — if it does not stick, the print will fail), the layer-by-layer build-up, and any support structures being generated.
