Design is intentional problem-solving
Design is the process of creating something — an object, a system, or a space — that solves a problem or fulfills a need. Every designed object began as a question: How can I make this better? Who needs this? What should it do? Design is not decoration — it is purposeful creation.
Everything around you was designed
Look around the room. Your chair was designed. Your pencil was designed. The light fixture, the window, the door handle — every single object was created by a designer who made decisions about its shape, material, size, and function. Design is everywhere.
The difference between designing and making
Making is the act of building something. Designing is the act of planning what to make and how to make it. Design comes BEFORE making. Designing means you first think: What is the purpose? Who will use it? What constraints must I respect? Then you make.
Three types of design
Product design creates objects people use (chairs, phones, tools). Environmental design creates spaces people inhabit (buildings, parks, classrooms). Communication design creates visuals people read (signs, posters, logos). All three types use the same core design thinking process.

Design starts with a problem
Ask: Who has this problem? How often? How much does it bother them? The clearer the problem, the better the solution.

Empathy drives great design
Empathy means understanding someone else's experience deeply enough to design something that genuinely helps them.

Sketching is thinking
A rough sketch communicates an idea faster than 100 words. Speed and clarity matter — not artistic perfection.

Iteration makes it better
Version 1 is always a starting point, never a final answer. Great products go through hundreds of iterations.
