Control exact position and size using coordinates and dimension inputs — the precision skills that separate designers from accidental makers.

Position: the XYZ coordinate system
Every object in 3D space has a position defined by three coordinates: X (left/right), Y (forward/backward), Z (up/down). Moving an object by typing X=0, Y=0, Z=0 places it at the origin — the center of the workplane. Typing X=50 moves it 50mm to the right. Precise coordinate input is essential for positioning parts that must fit together.
Scaling: absolute vs relative
Absolute scaling sets the exact size: 'make this box 30mm wide.' Relative scaling changes by a factor: 'make this 2× bigger.' In Tinkercad, the dimension fields are always absolute — type the exact target dimension. Absolute scaling is used when you know the required dimension.
Tinkercad precision tip: the ruler tool
Tinkercad has a Ruler tool (press R) that snaps to any point on your model and shows exact distances between points. Use it to verify: Is this gap exactly 2mm? Is the center of this hole at X=15? Is this wall exactly 3mm thick? The Ruler tool is your precision verification tool — use it constantly.
Alignment: the critical step before combining
Before combining or grouping shapes, they must be correctly aligned. Tinkercad has an Align tool that snaps selected shapes to any of 6 axes: left edge, center, right edge, front edge, center, back edge, bottom, middle, top. Misaligned groups create models that look wrong and print wrong.

XYZ coordinates
X=left/right. Y=forward/back. Z=up/down. Setting Z=0 places the object's bottom face exactly on the workplane.

Absolute vs relative scaling
Absolute: type the final size (30mm). Relative: change by multiplier (2×). Tinkercad always uses absolute — type the exact target.

Ruler tool
Press R to activate. Click any surface point and drag to another — shows exact distance. Use to verify gaps, wall thickness, and hole positions.

Mirror tool
Creates a perfectly symmetric duplicate along any axis. Design one half, mirror it — guaranteed perfect symmetry.
