What is CAD software and why does it exist?
CAD stands for Computer-Aided Design. CAD software gives designers a precise digital workspace to create, modify, and communicate 3D objects before building anything physical. CAD transformed product design by enabling instant modifications, exact measurements, and direct connection to manufacturing machines like 3D printers and CNC cutters.
The Tinkercad interface: four key areas
Every CAD interface has four zones: (1) Viewport: the 3D space where you see and manipulate objects. (2) Shape panel: the library of primitives you can drag in. (3) Properties panel: where you set exact dimensions and position. (4) Toolbar: tools for view, align, group, and export. Learning to navigate these four zones is the first skill in any CAD environment.
Navigation: orbit, pan, and zoom
Navigating a 3D viewport requires three movements. Orbit rotates the view around the model (right-click drag). Pan moves the view left/right/up/down without rotating (middle-click drag). Zoom changes how close or far the view is (scroll wheel). Right-click drag = orbit the VIEW. Left-click drag = move the OBJECT.
The workplane and the grid
The workplane is the flat surface on which objects are placed (like a virtual table). The grid divides the workplane into measurable squares — typically 1mm per grid unit in Tinkercad. Snapping to grid means objects automatically align to grid points, making placement precise. Always design on the grid — random placement = random dimensions = objects that do not fit together.

What CAD replaced
Before CAD: all product drawings by hand on drafting tables. Each change = complete redraw. CAD reduced design time by 80%.

Orbit vs move — critical distinction
Right-click drag = orbit the VIEW. Left-click drag = move the OBJECT. Confusing these is the #1 source of beginner frustration.

Why the grid matters
Grid snapping makes every object align to measurable units automatically. Without it, objects land at random sub-millimeter positions and won't fit together.

CAD to print: direct connection
CAD file → STL export → sliced into G-code → printed exactly as designed. Direct digital-to-physical pipeline eliminates human error.
