๐Ÿ‘‹ Hello, Young Maker!

Hello, young maker! Look around your classroom right now. Can you see something round? Something with four sides? Shapes are hiding everywhere โ€” in your books, your clock, your windows, and even your lunch box! Today we are going on a Shape Hunt to find them all!

๐ŸŽฏ What We Will Learn Today
  • Name the four basic shapes: circle, square, triangle, and rectangle
  • Find shapes hiding in classroom objects around me
  • Describe what makes each shape special (sides and corners!)
  • Draw a shape and name an object that looks like it

๐Ÿ“– Our Shape Words

WordWhat It Means
ShapeThe outline or form of an object โ€” what it looks like from the outside
โญ• CircleA perfectly round shape โ€” like a ball or the sun! 0 sides, 0 corners
๐ŸŸฅ Square4 equal sides and 4 corners โ€” like a tile or a sticky note
๐Ÿ”บ Triangle3 sides and 3 corners โ€” like a pizza slice or a roof!
โ–ฌ Rectangle4 sides and 4 corners, but two sides are longer โ€” like a door or book
SideA straight line that makes part of a shape's border
CornerThe point where two sides meet

๐ŸŒŸ Good Morning, Makers!

๐Ÿ’ก Morning Hook

Your teacher holds up a round ball and a square block. Look at both. Ask yourself: What is DIFFERENT about these two things? ๐Ÿค” Today we are going on a Shape Hunt โ€” shapes are hiding EVERYWHERE in our classroom!

โœ‹ Let's Do It! โ€” Shape Hunt

Follow these steps:

  1. Get your Shape Hunt recording sheet and a pencil โœ๏ธ
  2. Walk around the room quietly (like a sneaky shape detective!)
  3. Find ONE object that looks like a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle
  4. Draw or write the object in the matching column on your sheet
  5. Set your timer for 12 minutes โ€” GO! ๐Ÿƒ
  6. Come back to your seat when the timer rings ๐Ÿ””
  7. Color your drawings with your favourite crayons ๐ŸŽจ
โš ๏ธ Safety First! Walk slowly and carefully โ€” no running! Handle classroom objects gently and put them back where you found them.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Let's Talk About It!

  • โ“ Which shape did you find the most of in our room?
  • โ“ Did you find anything surprising โ€” an object with an unexpected shape?
  • โ“ Can you find an object that has MORE THAN ONE shape in it?
  • โ“ If our classroom had NO shapes at all, what would it look like?
๐Ÿง  Key Fact

Every shape follows special RULES! A circle has 0 sides and 0 corners. A triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners. A square has 4 EQUAL sides and 4 corners. A rectangle has 4 sides and 4 corners (but two sides are longer!).

โœ๏ธ Now It's Your Turn!

Draw TWO objects you found during the Shape Hunt. Next to each drawing, write the name of the shape you see in it. Make it as big and colourful as you can! ๐ŸŽจ

Write in your Maker Journal:
โœ๏ธ Today I found a __________ shaped like a __________.
โœ๏ธ My favourite shape is __________ because __________.
โœ๏ธ A shape I never noticed before was __________ in/on a __________.

โšก Common Misconceptions

  • Kids may say a rectangle IS a square โ€” gently show the difference: all 4 sides of a square are equal!
  • Kids may not recognise a shape if it is rotated (e.g., triangle pointing left) โ€” practice with rotated flashcards.
  • Kids may count a circle's curve as a 'side' โ€” explain: a circle is one smooth curve with no straight sides.

๐Ÿ’› Support Strategies

  • Pre-sort 4 objects (one per shape) for them to label instead of hunting.
  • Provide shape reference cards with pictures at the desk.
  • Allow drawing instead of writing shape names.

๐ŸŒŸ Extension / Challenge

  • Find an object with TWO shapes in it and explain both.
  • Sort everything in your pencil case by shape!
  • Can you build all 4 shapes using only straight sticks?

โฐ Time Management Tip

If the Shape Hunt runs long, skip the partner share and go straight to the carpet circle for Analysis โ€” discussion is more valuable than finishing every column on the sheet.
